Tackling Food Loss and Waste:
Lessons from Spain with ZeroW
In the framework of the ZeroW project, project partners and SILL4 partners traveled to Barcelona to gain insights into innovative approaches to reducing food loss, redistributing surplus, and fostering sustainability in the food system.
In the framework of the ZeroW project, project partners and SILL4 partners traveled to Barcelona to gain insights into innovative approaches to reducing food loss, redistributing surplus, and fostering sustainability in the food system.
This initiative builds on ZeroW’s mission to implement advanced technological solutions to combat post-harvest food losses, emphasizing the importance of policy reforms and supply chain reorganization for maximum impact.
Key Lessons from Spain
- Indulleida (Lleida): This fruit processor ensures efficiency by using all parts of the fruit and collaborates with food banks to turn surplus produce into juice.
- Talkual Food: A subscription-based service that rescues “imperfect” fruits and vegetables, delivering them directly to consumers to minimize waste.
- Foodbanks of Barcelona: With strong logistics and public education programs, Barcelona’s food banks distribute surplus food effectively to local charities. Their collaboration with the Catalonian government is central to their success.
- Espigoladores: A non-profit that gleans surplus produce for redistribution or transformation into products like marmalades and soups. Their work also provides job opportunities for vulnerable groups.
- Catalonian Government Initiatives: Spain’s food redistribution law highlights the role of policy in waste reduction. Initiatives like converting surplus oranges into juice for food banks demonstrate effective public-private collaboration.
The delegation also explored the Folou Project, which focuses on tools to measure and reduce food loss, sparking ideas for future collaboration and broader implementation of ZeroW technologies.
Collaboration and Action
The visit underscored the need for partnerships across the food value chain, innovative business models, consumer education, and robust policy frameworks to drive sustainable change.
